Applewood's Jenny and Ken chose a retirement village for their future
Retirement village operators are accustomed to hearing new residents say "I should have done it sooner".
They also hear current residents cautioning future residents "Don't leave it too late".
Applewood residents Ken and Jenny moved from their apartment in Melbourne's Brunswick East and chose Applewood Retirement Village for its Doncaster location.
"We decided on a retirement village because we started thinking about the future and anticipating health issues," Jenny said. "If Ken were not around, this would be a secure place if I was on my own."
Many move to a retirement village for the safety of a secure gated community with Applewood being one of the few retirement villages offering staff on site around the clock who are fully trained to help in emergency support.
The resort-style facilities are also a big benefit.
Residents can start their morning with a swim in the indoor heated pool and enjoy an afternoon of lawn bowls before having dinner in Applewood's restaurant The Orchard.
"We thought we weren't old enough, but that was a mistake," Doris said. "You need to come in when you're really able to enjoy everything."
Doris and her husband Peter moved to the village from their family home in Balwyn because they like travelling and like the security Applewood provides.
"Moving to Applewood has changed the way we live," said Peter.
The couple said they are a lot more relaxed and a lot busier participating in a host of activities in the village.
"To get the maximum benefit of living in a beautiful place like Applewood, the longer you're in here, the better," Peter said.
The journey to finding the right retirement village can feel overwhelming at times but having access to the right support and information can make it a much simpler - and even exciting - experience.
